Dear Diary,
I miss the light. I know that I complain about the harshness of the fluorescents, but that’s better than what I get now–peeps of light in between piles of paper, Jessi’s shadow as she hunches over the keyboard, and people leaning on me. Not to mention the multiple stabs I get all the time from the plethora of staples littering my top.
I mean, look at me! Okay, my poor left side (Image 1), which at most ever has a single pile of active work, has 3 “active” piles of Late Graduation Applications. I mean, do you really need three piles of the same thing? And that computer is going to overheat with all those open spreadsheets, half-typed emails, and tabs. When If that thing bursts into flame, who’s really going to suffer? ME, that’s who!
I’m really concerned about my right side though (See Image 2). Jessi is usually so courteous, allowing that side to breathe and soak up what little natural light comes in from the skylights. She’s so systematic, with everything she’s not actually working on put away in various folders and sorters. Not like some of the other desks around here who haven’t seen the light of day nor bulb since their installation.
But right now? Not even close. I’ve got what–4 piles of transfer credit requests? Seriously though, I don’t even understand why she needs 4 different piles. Not to mention THE RED FOLDER of processed late graduation files–it just keeps getting heavier and heavier. I’m not sure if I’d rather it be here on top of me, or in the hanging rack threatening to bring everything down. And, do you see that cup? That thing will sit there all day waiting to get washed because Jessi is “too busy” to walk away and give me a few minutes of peace. And that’s just today. Yesterday it was 2 piles of transfer requests, one pile of graduation applications, a pile of miscellaneous “stuff” from the printer. Who knows what’ll happen tomorrow. And the Commencement book proofs are coming soon, as are the Cap & Gown binders, event materials, etc. It’s always a surprise as we get closer to commencement and degree conferral!
I guess that’s just May…July will open up for a few months until the August graduation date rolls around. But nothing is like May; I’m glad it only comes around once a year.
