Preface: Betteridge’s Law
I saw a shirt on Facebook that read:
F*ck, Sh*t, C*ck, D*rm
Just another 4 letter word #reslifeprobs.
First, I think the shirt is stupid. Actually, lazy. The shirt is lazy. Second, “4 letter” should include a hyphen. See, “letter” acts as a modifier to the number four. Third, it prompted me to write the following Facebook post:
This aversion to using the word “dorm” is ridiculous. And, I don’t need a lesson in the origin of the word or it’s meaning versus “residence hall.” I get it. I just think it’s a ridiculous argument. And, despite that fact that it’s trying to do the exact opposite, it makes us look small. It’s a battle we lost. Time to move on.
After, I thought to myself, “you know, Matt – this would make an excellent blog post.” I could write about how it alienates us from our campus partners or how little it actually impacts our work with students. I had all intention of doing so. However, I think what I wrote on Facebook was sufficient.
Feel free to use the comments to gather ye pitchforks.
