I love mornings. Sunrises. Coffee. Greeting the day. An early run or yoga session, I love it! I love waking up early and accomplishing a few things before getting ready for work.
I hear from a lot of colleagues and students that they don’t like mornings. Or that they aren’t a “morning person”. I believe it. I’m not a night owl. I love going to bed early and I love waking up early. We all have our preferences. I do think, however, that there are ways to simplify and maximize your morning time whether that’s 20 extra minutes or 2 extra hours.
I see tweets all the time or articles like this one about how to maximize your mornings and I love reading about them. I love reading about other people taking advantage of the moments before the sun comes up to kick-start their day in the way they choose.
As student affairs professionals, our days usually don’t allow for a lot of down time. For me, mornings are my quiet time before the madness of the day starts. My latest tactic is all about 3’s. I have been trying to accomplish 3 things each morning before I head out the door to work. It’s fun, it feels like a little challenge, and sometimes they are very simple things, but I leave the house feeling accomplished and ready to take on the day. This week, that has included the following:
- a run
- finish doing the dishes from the night before
- a blog post
- respond to a “fun” email from a friend
- write a letter
- pack my lunch
- do my nails
I hop in my car to head to work after spending some time in the morning either getting things done, or spending some time on me and it starts my day off on the right foot. I find that I get to work and am more productive in the first few hours that I am here than on the days that I don’t make time for myself in the morning. Give it a try and let me know how it works for you to have a morning of 3’s.
