Many SA Grads and Pros around the country have recently started their journeys in a new city, at a new institution and working in a new position. I am among the many who fall within this category. As the first day of class approaches and we juggle the new tasks that are placed upon us, the adjustment may be difficult. Here are some things that I am finding useful in making my new home my home:
Go to a community event
By immersing yourself in the community, on and off campus, you allow yourself to see the city, get your bearings and meet new people. As a result, you learn about the culture and atmosphere of your new home.
Get a library card
Let’s be real, as SA Grads and Pros, we are always learning and what is the greatest way to learn? Reading. Go grab a library card and find something new to read. Whether this is for class, professional development, or enjoyment, it is worth it to get a library card.
Find a coffee shop
I mean, come on. Who doesn’t love coffee? Coffee shops can serve as the perfect place to relax, get some work done, have a meeting, go on a date. Whatever you may use a coffee shop for, if you are in a college town, chances are there is at least one somewhere. Check it out! Even if you don’t drink coffee, a coffee shop should be on your list of things to find.
Explore
Whether this means going for a walk around the city, taking public transportation, going for a run, finding a hiking trail, calling an Uber, taking a guided tour, or driving around with a map and a GPS — whatever your method, go explore. How will you feel welcome and a part of the community if you don’t know where anything is? Take a friend along, ask a stranger for directions, Google top destinations. Discover something new! I promise you won’t be disappointed.
I know that everyone has their own way of adjusting. For me, it is to dive in and acquaint myself as I go. I know that this list probably won’t work for everyone, but I thought I would share what has been helping me adjust to my new home. I hope it helps!
