If you have been following me along my journey with my student parent program, Parent Mavericks, then you might agree that we have done a lot within one semester. (See the first two posts here and here.) We had a big Chill Out! with Parent Mavericks getting to you know event, a kids day with volleyball event, and a pop-up coffee break with kids event. Let’s also not forget the fact that we advertise events hosted by other organizations that are kid-friendly and have been diligent in trying to engage our student parents with the Facebook group and the monthly newsletter. That’s actually still not it because fall 2015 has not ended yet!
My team and I thought long and hard about what to do to end the semester, and honestly, we won’t be doing anymore events because there is not really enough time; however, we do have some outreach initiatives in place. I am so excited to send out holiday cards to a few student parents. We did some assessment, and a few of the respondents gave us information to send out holiday cards so that is what we are currently working on. We are also creating an infographic to e-mail out to a list of student parents to inform them that we exist. I had a lovely talk with a professional named Lisa at Portland State when I was doing some benchmarking on how to get the word out about our program to a huge student body and she was super helpful. She suggesting reaching out to other departments to get the information we need to reach out to student parents. Not only am I working on the holiday card with a cute picture of me and my team as reindeer, but I am also designing a graphic to e-mail out to a list of student parents inviting them to join our Facebook page and sign-up for the monthly newsletter.
While I am putting my very limited, very basic graphic design skills to the test (thank you Canva.com!), my team has been brainstorming what exactly we want to do for the spring. We really want to collaborate more and we have those opportunities, but we also want to do our own events. One event I am really excited for is a family Valentine’s day breakfast we are planning to have the day before Valentine’s Day! We also have a possible BBQ and field day event collaboration idea and plans to do another coffee break event. We are still in the planning steps, and it gets hard to move forward when you are collaborating. My team is amazing, and I have full confidence in them.
We are ending the fall and preparing for the spring exactly as I figured we would, and I can’t wait to see my team’s hard work come to fruition again! As always, if you have suggestions, questions, or ideas, please let me know. My team and I welcome any help, guidance, and encouragement with our new initiative.
