The start of every year is new opportunity to make goals, memories, and moments of happiness in your life. Each year allows people to add a new chapter to their success story with fresh pages of opportunities. In 2016, my #OnewordSA was Determination towards embracing success and encouraging others to stay focused on their life goals. This year, I wanted to pick a theme to channel new motivation for student affairs professionals, graduates, and students.
My #OnewordSA for 2017 is Resilience: staying positive during the negative moments in my life. This word is important for 2017 because it focuses on personal growth and happiness. I want to share with my peers and students the power of staying focused even through negative experiences. The road to success will have its ups and downs, but I want to empower others to believe in their success despite personal barriers.
The Importance of Resilience
Resilience is an important skill that can help people overcome difficult moments in their lives. The power to reflect, understand, and overcome setbacks helps people develop leadership skills. I enjoy talking to peers and students about their own ways of overcoming obstacles and staying positive. This year, I want to help students find their path of success with an understanding that setbacks are okay. The important part of setbacks is the motivation to keep moving forward and working towards your own success.
Minor Setback, Major Comeback
Throughout the year, there may be moments that challenge your will to keep progressing towards a major change in your life. Despite how motivational overcoming a setback can be, the emotional effects may lead you to give up on that goal. Setbacks are never a positive event to deal with, however the power to overcome them is important. Remember that any setback is not an issue that a person has to face alone or feel helpless about. Use resources, peers, or networks to help you reach your goal and remember to never give up on your path to success.
An important life skill is the power of self-reflection on your setbacks and how you plan to use those lessons. Sometimes, a step back can become an important motivator to move forward with a new self-recognition.
My Goals Of Resilience
Some personal steps and goals that I hope to use in 2017 to stay Resilient are
- Reflect on 3 positive moments on a weekly basis.
- Focus on a yearly mantra towards achieving goals and helping others.
- Do more ‘pay it forward’ activities and events for others.
- Write a “3 Good For Everyone 1 Bad List.”
- Believe in myself during the unknown.
What’s Your Mantra Of Success?
As we start 2017, I want to encourage everyone to share and believe in their mantra of success. Use a powerful and positive motivator to stay strong and make your 2017 a great one.
My personal mantra of success for 2017 is “Allow yourself to be the hero you believe you are and keep moving forward.” Good luck everyone and have a Happy New Year.
“Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right.”-Oprah Winfrey
