So a lot has happened since last time! Last I wrote, I hadn’t gone to either of the placement conferences I planned to attend, MAPC (Mid-Atlantic Placement Conference) or TPE (The Placement Exchange), nor had I helped with the Rutgers College Student Affairs graduate program Interview Days. Also, my partner hadn’t chosen her desired graduate program and I was eager and excited for it all to happen. One month later and I’m worn out!
This exhaustion is mostly from the whirlwind that was TPE. I spent about four days in Baltimore interviewing with a bunch of great schools for various positions and it was a nonstop roller coaster the whole time. It was emotionally and physically draining to be “on” the whole time and it was just a noisy experience, being in what equates to an airplane hangar full of interview tables. I’m glad I went though, having been able to see old friends, have some great conversations, and hopefully planted some seeds for fruitful job leads. Being at MAPC a few weeks prior helped since it was essentially the same format just on a smaller scale. Also, certain interviews from MAPC led to second round interviews at TPE, which felt very satisfying. On top of all this even, it was awesome to visit Reading, PA (where MAPC was held) and Baltimore, having never spent much time in either place.
In terms of looking ahead, I’m glad that I had our spring break to recover and reflect from TPE. As I previously mentioned, my partner just finalized her acceptance to a graduate program in student affairs at the University of Maine. This is leaning my search more northbound from where I am now but we’ve agreed that we both need to make our choices in terms of what is best for us personally. She chose Maine for those reasons and we agreed that I should do the same. We’ll make it work wherever I end up. In the end, I genuinely appreciate the support we give to each other; it makes of all this a heck of a lot easier.
This conference season has been quite excellent, (expect more thoughtful reflections on ACPA soon). I stayed with fellow grads from my program throughout it all and it was a great opportunity to bond with folks I will certainly miss when this is all over. With only a few weeks until my final semester is over, I’m still optimistic and energized to finish strong. All your support and positive vibes are certainly welcome though!
Tune in next month for the next episode! Take care!
