Happy Tuesday! A few weeks ago there was an interesting dialogue on Twitter about job placement at placement conferences. The discussion was centered around the potential misnomer of calling these conferences placement conferences because it builds an idea that everyone should be placed into a job after the conference. The issue I have with this idea is that since there are more candidates or potential employees there than employers there is going to be some people who are not “placed”. This can lead people to feeling like they failed if they leave the conference without a job or any leads. I also put placed in quotes because I believe that one is not placed in a job. One is a good fit for an institution, department, and serving those students. One interviews and demonstrates what they can bring to the table. I have enjoyed these conferences from both the employer and candidate side of the table and have seen the immense benefit.
So, what is in a name? Is it in the name? Is it how we build up these conferences in our field culture?
Why do you think this is? I would love to continue the conversation!
