My desk is under construction. MCNY has started a new chapter in its history and moved to a new home. As of today, this is what my desk looks like 1 week after the big move. As I look at my desk I am realizing the work that needs to be done. My coffee mug is in place…and that was one of the first things I needed in order to make my desk Mike Burgo-ready.
I see my desk (and office) as a blank canvas to make it my own. Everything on it is new and I am still trying to figure out how it can best reflect me. Do I like my computer there? Do I want to move my phone to the other side? There is still a lot of work to do, but I am excited that this will be a fresh start for our community and hopefully I’ll have both my desk and office ready for the summer semester. ?
When I think about what to add to my desk, it makes me want to try something fun but also practical. I’ve had so many students tell me that I needed a plant or some sort of color in my old office and now I am thinking…a plant would be nice? I do have a spot in the middle part of my desk behind one of my screens that I think would be a good place. Also, I want to bring in a few pictures of family and friends. Recently, I brought a picture of me and my Orientation staff when I was a GA during grad school and so I think that process has started.
Finally, I need some more organization on my desk. After I started unpacking, piles of paper started to form too quickly and now I feel like every time I clean up, another pile forms in its place. I need to get organized so that it is more manageable. Now that I have started to think about it, I have too many ideas and I want to make sure that these ideas make both my office and desk a welcoming place for students to come visit and hangout.
